Walking for 75 years

Over 60 walkers were on Cloud nine on 11 April when we celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Ramblers. Our East Cheshire group went walking with the other two groups - Congleton, and South Cheshire - that comprise our Area. Three walks converged on the summit of The Cloud (1125 feet, near Bosley) at lunchtime. Cloud

The Congleton group started from their town centre, doing a nine-mile circular walk via the summit while South Cheshire did a similar length walk from Rushton. We joined with Congleton's footpath secretary, Alan Soper, and more Congleton members on a shorter walk from Timbersbrook. Alan showed us ancient historical sites and waymarkers, and entertained us with stories of past and present battles over footpaths and access rights.

The weather was fine and breezy as Ramblers' anniversary batons were waved and celebratory drinks were downed at the top. Our thanks to South Cheshire's chairman, Phil Guest, for the inspiration for this successful gathering.

  • 30th October, Slide show: Chorley Village Hall, Knutsford Road, 7.30 for 7.45pm. Ian Harford, an experienced walker and walk leader, will talk about his experiences of walking in the Simien Mountains, Ethiopia. Cost: £4.00 including refreshments. Further information from Helen Richardson.
